History of the location.
The F60 was built in the 1980s as part of the "Friedrich-Engels" opencast mine. Work on this opencast mine began in the 1970s and led to the creation of one of the largest opencast mines in Germany. The opencast mine produced brown coal, which was mainly used to generate energy. However, with the change in Germany in 1989, the era of open-cast brown coal mining ended in Lusatia and thus also at the location of the F60.
From the 1990s onwards, the F60 was used as a visitor mine. Various tours were offered where visitors had the opportunity to experience the history of brown coal mining and gain insights into the technology of the F60. In 2002 the F60 was designated a "Technical Monument of National Importance".
Current usage and meaning.
Today the F60 is one of the most important tourist attractions in Lusatia. The various tours that are offered are an experience for young and old. From the platform of the F60 you have a breathtaking view over the Lusatian landscape. There is also the opportunity to take part in various events, such as the annual F60 festival, which features concerts and culinary delights.
Development into a local recreation area
In 2016, the neighboring Bergheider See was created by flooding the former opencast mine. The Bergheider See is intended to become a popular local recreation area and an important part of tourism in the region.
